When Lynn Hathaway, 44, saw a holiday snap of herself at 95 kgs, sat next to her young daughter, she was shocked into action. Desperate to ensure she would be around to see her daughter grow up, Lynn turned to the New Atkins Nutritional Approach.

“For as long as I could remember, I’d been big. I wasn’t one of those women who could say ‘I remember when I was a size 12’ because, even as a teenager, I’d been overweight. Sweet treats were my downfall – if I bought a box of Celebrations, I couldn’t just have one or two, the lot would be gone within two days. I ignored my weight issues for a long time, but in 2012, two factors combined which jolted me into action. Firstly, I was looking through some snaps from our holiday to Spain the previous year, when I stumbled across a photo of myself sat with my daughter. I was deeply embarrassed as I look at myself bursting out of my swimming costume, so I just shoved them back into the drawer. However, not long after, I was having a routine check-up, when my doctor told me my cholesterol level had hit 4.85 and was climbing. He explained that a cholersterol level of 5 or above would leave me exposed to an increased risk of a heart attack and other coronary health issues. Of course I was mortified by my appearance, but I was more horrified by the idea that if I didn’t slim down and bring my cholesterol under control, I might not be around to see my daughter grow up. My husband had tried Atkins and successfully lost weight in the past, but I’d always been sceptical about the safety of the diet. Reluctantly, I read his copy of the New Atkins, New You book and, to my surprise, I found all of my pre-conceptions of the diet were completely incorrect. I’d studied biochemistry at university and I was amazed by how the science behind the weight loss approach made complete sense. Far from feeling hungry and deprived on Atkins I found myself enjoying a wider variety of foods than before, including lots of colourful vegetables. Before long, my sweet cravings vanished and instead I was devastated if I couldn’t get hold of sprouts for my tea.
My cholesterol dropped steadily – it’s now at 4.1, but my ‘good’ cholesterol has increased and my ‘bad’ cholesterol – the type that I was scared would take me away from my daughter, is rapidly decreasing. I’ve just enjoyed a 10 day holiday with my family and I even felt confident enough to wear bikinis and slinky summer dresses for the first time in many years. In less than a year, I’ve gone from a size 22 on my top half to a size 12/14. On my bottom half I’ve shrunk from a size 18 to a size 10/12.
